Clingmans Dome Trail: the Highest Point in Tennessee | Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Clingmans Dome Trail Overview

The Clingmans Dome trail is a 1-mile roundtrip hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower, you'll stand at an astounding 6,643-foot elevation, the highest point in Tennessee. This hike offers a scenic, 360-degree view of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and surrounding regions of Tennessee and North Carolina.

The Clingmans Dome Trail is a great all-around hike, whether you plan to solo the trail or hike with friends and family. The trail is a paved concrete trail that runs slightly uphill to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower. Just make sure to layer up since the Clingmans Dome weather is very cold because of the high elevation. There are also restrooms at the parking lot for a quick stop before you start your trek.

Arriving at the Clingmans Dome Parking Lot

I arrived at the parking lot with my family for the Clingmans Dome trail early, around 8 am. The Clingmans Dome parking lot fills up incredibly fast, so I recommend arriving early enough so that you can find a parking spot!

Upon arriving at the Clingmans Dome parking lot, we were welcomed by an incredible Smoky Mountain sunrise. The skies were filled with a vibrant pink and orange hue, and we had an incredible scenic overlook of the mountains.

At the parking lot, you'll also find a sign with a general overview of the Clingmans Dome hike and what to expect. One thing that I found interesting from reading the sign is that air pollution, such as due to burning coal, can occasionally cause a haze in the sky that can limit viewing from the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower. However, we did not find anything limiting our view during the Clingmans Dome hike!

Hiking the Clingmans Dome Trail

The Clingmans Dome trail is filled with scenic mountain overlooks throughout the hike as well as wildlife that frequent the trail. I enjoyed seeing the small birds and the quick American red squirrels.

Once you get on the trail, you’ll find the Clingmans Dome Information Center and Store just a few yards from the parking lot. The Clingmans Dome Information Center is a relatively small brick building. This is a great place to stop before making your way up to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower.

The Clingmans Dome Trail is moderately difficult because of the steep incline. However, the paved concrete makes the trail easier since you don't have to worry about roots or slick rocks. I was able to hike the Clingmans Dome Trail in my tennis shoes.

However, the Clingmans Dome Trail can be incredibly cold, even in June. I wish that I had worn gloves since my hands were frozen. Nevertheless, I am glad I brought a hoodie and rain jacket to layer with my t-shirt.

Clingmans Dome Observation Tower

The scenic views at the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower are impressive, to say the least. Walking up the observation tower, which had a panoramic view of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, was my favorite part of the trip. The wind was incredibly strong, and I was holding onto the handrails while walking to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower.

The Eastern View from the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower is my favorite view, providing an incredible overlook of Mount Le Conte, as shown in the picture below. From the Eastern View, you may also see High Top, Newfound Gap, Mount Guyot, Big Cataloochee Mountain, Mount Mitchell, Mount Pisgah, and more.

The Southern View from the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower seemed to stretch for miles. The Southern View includes Andrews Bald, another incredible overlook in the Smokies. We hiked Andrews Bald trail the same day we visited Clingmans Dome since Andrews Bald is right by the Clingmans Dome Trail. The Southern View also includes Cherokee, Thomas Ridge, Shepherd Bald, Standing Indian, Fontana Lake, Cheoah Bald, and the Snowbird Mountains.

The Western Overlook is on the Tennessee and North Carolina border. The Western View includes amazing Smoky Mountain trails like Gregory Bald, Thunderhead Mountain, Cades Cove (one of my personal favorites), Blanket Mountain, and Cove Mountain.

The Northern View from the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower includes views of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I found it spectacular to see these incredible cities from the observation tower. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge seem massive from the ground yet appear smaller in comparison when they stand next to everything else. I was reminded of the true vastness of our planet.

Final Thoughts of the Clingmans Dome Trail

Let me know what you think and if you plan to visit Clingmans Dome. Seeing the incredible overlook of the Smokies from the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower is a true wonder of the Southeast. I hope you get the chance to check it out.
