Andrews Bald Overview
Andrews Bald is a short yet moderate 3.6-mile trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Andrews Bald is an incredible trail to accompany your Clingmans Dome hike since the Andrews Bald trailhead is right off the Clingmans Dome trail.
One thing that I really liked about Andrews Bald is how short of a distance it is to get to such an incredible overlook at the top. You’ll be amazed by the view at Andrews Bald, providing an overlook of Fontana Lake and the Smokies.
Andrews Bald Hike
We began our Andrews Bald hike from the Clingmans Dome parking lot. From the side of the trail going up to Clingmans Dome, you’ll find a sign labeled “Forney Ridge Trail.” Take this trail and you’re on your way to Andrews Bald! The Appalachian trail also connects to Andrews Bald, so if you’re hoping to hike some extra miles, this is a great way to get those extra steps!
I really enjoyed seeing all the ferns and wildflowers growing alongside the trail. Andrews Bald also has a lot of birds that we enjoyed listening to along the hike. The smokies are brimming with nature and wildlife. Andrews Bald is no exception.
The trail was really cold on a June day, so make sure to bring some extra layers with you. The peak of Andrews Bald is 5,906 feet, so this elevation gain can make the area much colder than areas close by, such as Gatlinburg Tennessee.
There’s an amazing overlook you’ll find while hiking to the top. At this overlook, there’s an opening between the trees to see the Smoky Mountains in the backdrop contrasted with the gorgeous ferns in the foreground.
Andrews Bald Scenic View
The Andrews Bald scenic view is stunning. The area is an open clearing where you can sit down, eat lunch, and take in the view.
I loved that Andrews Bald was not too crowded on a Saturday morning. A lot of the overlooks in the Smokies can be extremely crowded, but Andrews Bald was a peaceful and serene spot with not too many people. After a nice hike to the top, it was nice getting to take a rest at the top!
If you’re looking for a great overlook of Fontana Lake, look no further than Andrews Bald. The summit provides an exceptional lookout point of the lake with the mountains surrounding it.
